What is Shingles?
Shingles occurs when the varicella-zoster virus, which remains in the body after chickenpox infection, becomes active again later in life.
Symptoms of shingles may include:

A blistering rash, usually on one side of the body
Headache or fever
Sensitivity or discomfort in the affected area
Shingles can sometimes lead to complications such as persistent nerve pain.
Who Should Consider the Shingles Vaccine?
The shingles vaccine may be recommended for older adults and people at higher risk of complications.
In New Zealand, the shingles vaccine is funded for eligible adults aged 65 years under the National Immunisation Programme.
People outside this age group may still be able to receive the vaccine with a prescription, depending on their circumstances.

What to Expect During Your Vaccination
When you visit for your shingles vaccination:
The pharmacist will review your health information and eligibility
The vaccine will be administered by injection in the upper arm
You may be asked to remain in the pharmacy for a short observation period
Some people may experience mild side effects, such as soreness at the injection site, tiredness, or mild flu-like symptoms.
